East End Cooperative Ministry Community House Achieves LEED Platinum Certification

Pittsburgh, PA

The U.S. Green Building Council recently granted Pittsburgh’s East End Cooperative Ministry (EECM) LEED Platinum Certification. The Community House achieved 56 points out of 69 possible points, comfortably surpassing the 52 point threshold for Platinum.

The EECM is a non-profit, interfaith organization of 18 congregations in Pittsburgh’s East End that have pooled their resources to offer community services including a homeless shelter and soup kitchen, youth education programs, and a recuperative care facility. In 2009 Terra was asked to join Perkins Eastman Architects and a team of engineers and community leaders to design the outdoor spaces for the Community House. Terra provided site and planting design services which employed native plantings, storm water systems and pervious paving in support of the LEED Platinum standards.

We were able to stretch the traditional definition of “sustainability” to that which is not only good for the planet, but for the people and profitability of the organization as well. Outdoor spaces were aggressively programmed to grow food; raised beds and a production greenhouse on the roof are joined by food production gardens on land as well. These beds, along with courtyard herb boxes, are planted by Repair the World volunteers and maintained by members of the EECM work therapy program, who use the skills learned on-site as job training for future employment. The produce from these food gardens is then used in the soup kitchen.

Congratulations to all who helped the EECM achieve such high standards!

San Antonio Botanical Garden's Family Adventure Garden breaks ground!

San Antonio, TX

TerraDesignStudios-SABG-Groundbreaking.jpg

Bob Brackman, Director of the San Antonio Botanical Gardens, recently checked in with an exciting update on their Family Adventure Garden. The grounds have been cleared and are nearly ready for the next stage of construction! Terra provided a Concept Master Plan for this expansion to provide visitors a unique opportunity for hands-on nature play to explore their native Texas landscapes.Through creative collaboration with national family garden and nature play experts and a passionate Garden Board, they are building a garden that captures the spirit of San Antonio’s natural systems in a way that connects with the child in all of us. Children and their caregivers will be invited to climb, build, dig, explore, and create in three re-imagined indigenous zones: Urban Neighborhoods, Southern Texas Plains and Texas Hill Country.  While plants, animals, geology, and weather are woven into the fabric of the Garden, the unique water story of San Antonio will be celebrated.

The Garden is slated to open Spring of 2017, and Bob has arranged for aerial photos to be taken monthly to document the evolution of the project. Stay tuned!

The Rainwater Cascades at Fellows Riverside Gardens Improves Ground Maintenance

Youngstown, OH

Terra Design Studios has been leading the implementation of the master plan for Fellows Riverside Gardens, part of Mill Creek MetroParks in Youngstown, Ohio, since its adoption in 2008.  Recent improvements as outlined in the master plan include the redesign of the Garden’s Great Lawn to remedy long-standing drainage issues.  Through collaboration with John Buck of Civil and Environmental Consultants (CEC), Terra developed a dry stream garden, called Rainwater Cascades, to artfully slow and treat the water during rainwater events while offering quiet beauty during dry times.

Gardens Director, Keith Kaiser, reported recently that “the Rainwater Cascades is doing exactly what it was designed to do.”  Since it was constructed, the Great Lawn has not had any issues with ponding and during the heaviest of storms, the water follows the streambed without erosion.  Good news indeed!

Terra recently visited the Monticello Sculpture Gardens to present the final design for the fourth annual flower exhibit on the campus of Lewis and Clark Community College. The 2015 show, titled Garden of Eatin’, will invite visitors to take a sensory journey through visually stunning, sweet smelling, and tasty edible displays in thirteen pocket gardens within the Sculpture Gardens.  A student favorite is bound to be Spirits and Suds, featuring planted and sculptural displays with enticing titles such as the Beer Garden, Bourbon on the Rocks, Bloody Mary Medley, Martini with a Twist, Margaritaville, and Wine Country! Previous shows centered around our pollinators, called BeeDazzled!; new cultivars with animal names, christened Menagerie in Bloom; and bold and colorful tropicals, The Bold and Beautiful.

Lewis and Clark Community College awarded an $850,000 Illinois Green Infrastructure Grant!

Godfrey, IL

Terra developed artful stormwater concepts and helped Gardens staff submit for this state-wide sustainability-minded grant. In September 2014, we learned that the Gardens would be awarded an $850,000 matching grant from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency for the design and construction of a 200-space green parking lot and terraced rain garden land art exhibit, called Radiating Waves. During a recent visit to the campus, Terra presented Design Development drawings, and will be collaborating with Sheppard Morgan Schwaab Engineers, Randy Burkett Lighting Design, Inc. and BRiC, Inc. on the further development of the project.

Terra selected to prepare a Master Plan for the Arboretum at the University of Kentucky

Lexington, KY

In early 2014, the Executive Director of the Arboretum, Molly Davis, initiated the update to the master plan upon receipt of a lead gift for a new Education Center.  Since the 2002 master plan, the 100-acre Arboretum was officially named the site of the state botanical garden, presenting confusing branding messages.  The updated master plan will focus on visitor experience, wayfinding and garden design within a distinct garden zone which will be nestled within the mature tree collections, and seven re-created micro-ecosystems along the Walk Across Kentucky. In November 2014, Terra led the master plan charette with the stakeholders of the Arboretum, and we returned to present master plan options in January (and to enjoy the excitement of an undefeated Wildcats season). Go Cats!

Terra returns to Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens for third time to design 2015 Winter Show

Pittsburgh, PA

Rob Thompson led the design of the 2011 and 2014 Winter Shows for Phipps, and he is revving up to begin theme development of his third show.  Previous shows centered around The Nutcracker, partnering with the Pittsburgh Ballet Company, and the stanzas for the classic carol, Winter Wonderland.  The 2015 Winter Show will bring the lyrics of Deck the Halls to life through a rich tapestry of poinsettias, cyclamen, amaryllis, and of course, holly!

Kingwood Center awards Master Plan commission to Terra Design Studios!

Mansfield, OH

In September 2014, Kingwood Center selected Terra and their team members, Seckel Group, The Acorn Group and EMD Consulting Group, from a national pool of candidates to design their master plan. Terra’s team will prepare an interpretive prospectus, strategic vision, architectural evaluation, and a site plan that ties those components together. Kingwood Center will celebrate its 50-year anniversary as a public garden in 2016, and the master plan will define an initial capital improvements phase to present to the public as part of this milestone celebration.

Cindy Tyler speaks at APGA Small Gardens Symposium at Fellows Riverside Gardens

Youngstown, OH

In September, Cindy and Scott Scarfone from Oasis Design teamed up to present highlights of the master planning process to a group of more than 60 attendees at this action-packed conference.  She highlighted Terra’s work at Edith J. Carrier Arboretum, Fellows Riverside Gardens, and Duke Gardens with the goal of demystifying the complexities of the process and highlighting a range of master plan products that serve individual garden needs.

The Family Adventure Garden at San Antonio Botanical Garden is off to a great start!

San Antonio, TX

TerraDesignStudios-SABG-Kickoff.jpg

Terra had the privilege to participate in a three-day workshop led by Robin Moore with the Natural Learning Initiative for the programming of the Family Adventure Garden. Terra was awarded the design commission in December 2013 as the Garden’s lead designer, and the workshop was the first important step in determining what the stakeholders envision for this long-awaited family destination.  Part of our time in Texas included a spectacular whirlwind tour of San Antonio and surrounding Texas Hill Country, which culminated with an up-close and personal encounter with the Lone Star State’s infamous longhorn cattle.  All in a day’s work . . .

Black Dog Brewing launches its first nano-brew!

Pittsburgh, PA

Team Terra, along with our friends at Peter Margittai Architects, convened at the Copper Kettle Brewery to learn the finer points of making our own brew for the upcoming Autumn Harvest Celebration at Cindy and Bryan’s farm.  We “poured” over 50 recipes and chose an autumn malty ale to celebrate the onset of shorter days and cooler temperatures.  Our mentoring brewmaster encouraged us to sample roasted grains, various malts and hops, and lots of the finished product!  We call our masterpiece “Solidago Septemberfest” by Black Dog Brewing.  Our office dogs, Halle, Tuesday, and Sadie, are hoping to reap in the royalties (in the form of dog treats) in exchange for naming rights!

Carnegie Museum of Art opens the LozziWurm Garden!

Pittsburgh, PA

TerraDesignStudios-LozziWurm.jpg

Carnegie Museum of Art is expanding their contemporary art exhibits outdoors in anticipation of the 2013 Carnegie International, with a new installation that opened to the public on April 27th. The LozziWurm is a colorful and tubular sculpture designed by Yvan Pestolozzi in 1972, and while a common fixture in Western European playgrounds, is unique in the United States.  Terra prepared a campus-wide master plan for the Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh in 2012 and were retained for full design services for the LozziWurm Garden, assisting museum curators contextually site the sculpture and create a garden space to welcome children and families.  The LozziWurm Garden also completes an important goal of the Master Plan goal by creating a more open, vibrant and welcoming environment at the entrance to the Museum of Art. The LozziWurm Garden will be a permanent fixture at the museum, and will be free of charge during museum hours.

Terra Design Studios joins the Seed Savers Exchange Team

Decorah, IA

TerraDesignStudios-SeedSaversExchange.jpg

After a national search, Terra Design Studios was selected to prepare a master plan for the Seed Savers Exchange Heritage Farm in Decorah, Iowa. The Seed Savers Exchange (SSE) was founded in 1975 to maintain a genetically diverse food supply for the world by preserving heirloom seeds.  SSE offers an alternative model to “big agriculture” on their 890-acre farm and nature preserve in northeastern Iowa.

Team Terra, including collaborators The Acorn Group and Alan Branhagen, will help guide SSE’s future development, as they expand their operations, develop new gardens, and continue to welcome the public to their amazing facility.  Please learn more about their important mission by visiting their website: www.seedsavers.org.

Terra was commissioned by Winchester Thurston School to create outdoor classrooms and play spaces at their Shadyside Campus!

Pittsburgh, PA

Winchester Thurston School (WTS) is a nationally recognized private school whose mission is to actively engage each student in a challenging and inspiring learning process that develops the mind, motivates the passion to achieve, and cultivates the character to serve. With the goal of enriching their city campus, WTS commissioned Terra Design Studios and MacLachlan, Cornelius & Filoni Architects to rehabilitate two courtyards with an eye to creating places for outdoor learning, natural play, and gross motor skill development.
