The Discovery Garden was the brainchild of Dr. Art Ode, the Director of Cox Arboretum and Gardens MetroParks. He wanted to welcome families to the otherwise little-visited Wegerzyn Garden, a small collection of formal gardens adjacent to a performing arts center, community gardens, model airplane flying field and some of the most exquisite natural areas in the city of Dayton. In 2006, the Discovery Garden opened its gates, and he was granted his wish.
On average, 600 people a day visit the children’s garden. Families come to explore pocket-sized re-creations of Ohio woodland, prairie, limestone bluffs and riparian systems, which preview the “real thing” right outside the garden’s gate. They are introduced to natural play exhibits that they can replicate at home in the Backyard Garden. Or they stroll through the Hands-on Garden, where youngsters in the gardening club grow and harvest their own vegetables and flowers.
