Already visited and beloved for its rich history and astounding views of the Gulf of Mexico, the stewards of Beauvoir aspired to welcome visitors so that they may also appreciate its natural heritage. The introduction of beautiful gardens played a key role in drawing more people to this 50-acre cultural destination.
Cindy Tyler, while a partner with MTR, prepared the master plan for the Gulf Coast Botanical Gardens at Beauvoir. The plan organized and amplified three topics told by the land: cultural heritage, natural heritage, and horticultural display. As Beauvoir slowly rebuilds after damage from Hurricane Katrina, Varina’s Garden behind the main house will be one of the first master plan gardens targeted for implementation. Utilizing found catalogue records and plant sales slips and Varina’s sketches and notes, this kitchen and flower garden is a careful re-creation in the spirit of her own design.
