August Wilson Center

Site Design

Pittsburgh, PA - Downtown

Anchoring the northern edge of Pittsburgh’s Cultural District, the August Wilson Center celebrates African-American contributions to the performing and visual arts.  Terra provided streetscape design for the Center in support of its LEED-NC gold designation, and more!  Pittsburgh’s street trees are historically seated in compacted urban fill, their roots unable to access air or water, both critical to tree health.  Ultimately, this situation below ground typically results in a seven-year mortality rate for young transplants. Thanks to an R.K. Mellon Foundation grant, Terra explored a variety of expanded soil volume technologies to increase the availability of good soil to tree roots, which resulted in the first engineered soil cell system in Pennsylvania.
